Networks for data and voice applications have traditionally been separated from each other inside the enterprise. They have been
deployed autonomously and operated in isolation, often by different teams within the organization. In most cases this is very inefficient.
It is widely acknowledged by the communications industry that the Internet Protocol (IP) is the
universal transport technology. The rapid adoption and migration of vendors to the use of IP as a transport medium for both data and voice
applications, speeds up the transition to a “
converged networking paradigm”. This includes those vendors who have historically used time-division multiplexing (TDM) infrastructures and
relied on “old world” practices. All
vendors are
now moving towards IP and are marketing or developing solutions based onconverged IP
network technologies.
IP-based telephony, voice over IP (VoIP) and IP-telephony are different terms describing the technology to transport voice on IP-based
networks.
Using IP as the ubiquitous transport medium also offers the enterprise significant gains in bandwidth efficiency, lower overall bandwidth requirements, ease of management, and the ability to deploy new applications more rapidly. On the LAN, data and voice can share a commoninfrastructure that is built up by standard IP routers and LAN switches. With these standard, low cost, building blocks the
enterprise network is implemented in a flexible and manageable way and provides the foundation for the IP-based communication
platform.
